3/30/09 Janice received a certified letter telling us we had 30 days to move everything out of Greatwides Warehouse. Greatwide Dedicated Transport II, LLC is who took over Stewart Stiles after Mr. Stiles died.
This was going to make life very interesting as Janice was scheduled for minor sinus surgery on 4/1/09, also 4/22/09 we were leaving for Boston. That meant a trip up to the warehouse to find out a few things as Janice couldn’t see how we were going to do this with all that was already scheduled in the allotted time. Janice had just been up there a few days before and in looking around, on the side she had asked Ralph if Greatwide was going under as there was nothing going on. “Oh no we are just slow right now.” Little did he know, at that time what was about to happen. He found out that afternoon after Janice left just before he left work.
So Janice hit the phones hard and got wind of some possible warehouses. On calling them the answers were; sorry we are full up or no they didn’t have heat or no they didn’t have racks.
Because of this being library materials it can’t be stacked so it has to go on racks and there has to be heat to keep it dry. On April 1, after the surgery was done and she probably was a bit out of it, she hit the phones again. Then a friend of Zane’s at worked suggested Curl’s. On calling Curl’s she learned that the man she needed to talk to was out of the office already. So she called back early the next day. On the 7th Ruth & Janice went over to check the place out. Thank God it was a fit and they had room for all the materials.
So we talked it over and Janice asked if she could maybe get some help as she was also having major right foot problems and ended up in a soft cast. Thank you Angela & Jeremy Seaquist, it couldn’t have been done without your help. They helped Janice wrap plastic over all the pallets and secure it after Ralph had pulled them all down. Janice did an inventory and plastered our name on each pallet load with a number. This was something she had been wishing we could have done in the beginning. Now we know where each pallet came from and kind of what is in it.
Angela and Janice also restacked pallets that were slumping that had been shipped from NEHGS. Someone had put a part full box in the bottom layers of six or eight of the pallets. Angela asked “Janice how can you pull and stack one of these so fast? You are hobbling around and just had surgery a few days ago you shouldn’t be doing this.” She said, “Practice moving a lot of books!” Janice answered. Also the work isn’t going to get done if the tough don’t get moving when the going gets rough. They had them all ready in I think it was two days. There were 130 pallets of library materials consisting of books, shelving and equipment. Following are a few pictures of the old warehouse and what we did to get ready for the move and moving into the new warehouse.
Sorry but the warehouse photo’s had to be take with available light as it is so large the flash won’t work, so some of these aren’t as good as Janice would have liked them to be.
4/9/09 This is just one of the rows of pallets ready to move out.
4/9/09 The other half of the first row.
4/9/09 More pallets wrapped up and inventoried ready to move out.
4/9/09 Jeremy moving pallets ready to load just as we were finishing up. Unfortunately the photo of Angela didn't turn out as she moved just as Janice took it.
4/13/09 Here is the truck lets get it loaded up.
4/13/09 First pallet going to the truck
4/13/09 First pallet is in the "can" as Ralph called it.
4/13/09 This truck is filling up, Stoney Way LLC are the Oregon Burial Site Guides and they have to go too.
4/13/09 Here is Ralph building a pallet for the big desk that was donated.
4/13/09 First Truck is now loaded and Ralph is putting in the bar to keep the load from shifting.
4/13/09 Ok Janice made it before the first truck.
4/13/09 Being met at the front door of Curl's, they are all ready for our trucks to start rolling in.
4/13/09 Here comes the first thing off, the big desk.
4/13/09 Here is another truckload coming in.
4/13/09 Janice said "Boy I am sure glad I don't have to back these big rigs into this doorway. These guys are good they do it on the first try. I wish I had, had a movie camera to show the way the two forklift drivers choreographed their moves while unloading and putting stuff away it was fun to watch while checking off the pallets coming in. No time wasted."
4/13/09 Moving things into place, shelving parts.
4/13/09 Here is how they get the pallets way up on top.
4/13/09 The driver was sure unhappy when he got ready to unload as the boys at the other end let him get out of the lot with the wrong trailer and didn't call him.
4/13/09 Ok this is better this one is stuffed with our stuff. The driver said they really gave him a bad time at the other end for taking the wrong trailer they were all waiting on the dock laughing at him.
4/13/09 This load are all the bound Oregonian's with some of the NGS stuff.
4/13/09 The shelves are nearly full in this section, this photo is only a small portion of the big long shelving unit, Janice was beginning to wonder if we were going to be able to get it all in.
4/13/09 This is Steel shelving parts up top and newspapers below and books below that.
4/13/09 Up it goes, it was amazing to watch these men put this stuff up so high and never a miss step with the forklifts.
4/13/09 These things are the shelving uprights that support the shelves, these came from NEHGS.
4/13/09 After the men had done a bit of shuffling they were able to get this out of the way and the move is done.
4/24/09 Meet our friend Claudia Woods. This is in Boston at the NEHGS evening party for the annual meeting. Ruth had to miss this so Janice had to go with out Ruth, as Ruth was very ill with some kind of bug. Claudia is who loaned us her office the year we got John's library. So that we could talk on the speakerphone to John's nephew about what he had and what we could do about saving it.
4/26/09 Deborah Rossi talking to some of us about some of her restoration projects after her program.
4/26/09 This is one of the pieces that she cleaned and reframed it really turned out nice.

4/26/09 This is another piece that she was working on and it had been in a lot of small pieces when she started it. The paper mends were extremely well executed. This photo doesn't do it justice.
5/9/09 It is so good to see Ruth feeling better and enjoying herself at the car show two days before we left for Raleigh NC.
5/11/09 It is time for a bit of sight seeing in Raleigh, NC, this is one of the many monuments on the capital grounds.
5/11/09 The large World War II monument on the capital grounds
5/11/09 Here is a close up of the base of the World War II monument.
5/11/09 Here is another of the many monuments that was in the light so that Janice could actually get a good photo of it.
5/11/09 These conferences are a great place to meet family you never knew you had until doing a lot of research and getting lucky. Meet Kevin von der Lippe and Janice Healy cousins through the Person & Freeman families. Thank you Kevin for all the treasures you shared that day with me the photocopies have been a big help.
5/13/09 Helen Leary and Ruth Bishop at the NGS exhibit hall.
5/15/09 Helen Leary was awarded the President's Citation. Unbeknown to her they had arranged for her two sons to be there also and they surprised her after she got the award.
5/15/09 Helen Leary with her son's, Mike on the left and Mat on the right.
5/17/09 Wow Ruth don't we wish this was our ride? We never know what fun things we will see on these book buying trips do we.
Back home again and back to work on book repairs and the never ending clean up from the flood, cataloging books, sorting, shelving, boxing up the over flow to send out to Curl’s. See book repair web page if you want to know more about this.
The Salt Lake Trip is coming up next.
